Wayne Jones Picks His Top Ten Deadly Stillwater Trout Flies
Wayne Jones is a multi capped Welsh international fly angler and part of the very successful Welsh Hawks Fly Fishing Team. Wayne is also the founder and owner of the Fly Shop and found it very hard to pick just ten patterns, but these ten patterns have all caught lots of trout and had some great results in the competitions.
Small Eyed Candy Floss Booby
If I had to fish one fly on the large Reservoirs this would be it. Weather fishing in on DI 7 or on a floating line this booby has worked really well for me on every lake I have fished. It works well on fresh stocked fish or older residents. It’s a great for fishing washing line over the weed beds and has accounted for some quality trout for me over the years.
Small Eyed Cat Straggle Booby
White eyed cat booby has been in my top ten since fishing with the Welsh youth team and still remains there now. The colour combination has stood the test of time and in the booby form just works. A great top dropper fly for early season on a sweep5 or sweep 7 line when fishing from the boat.

Original Biscuit FAB
I was first given this by Jim Crawford on the Lake of Mentith in Booby form. Wullie Leach tied me 6 with the original fritz and they proved very good everywhere I fished. Since then the colour has changed slightly and the FAB version has taken over for me. I find it best fished on an Airflo 12 foot fast or slow tip. I have had great success fishing one on the top dropper and one on the point with 2 hoppers in the middle.
Biscuit FAB
This is tied with all biscuit and was a bit of a mistake when first tied. I had been using this on the point for a number of years with great results fished best again on the tip lines or a floater with nymphs or hoppers. This version proved very successfully for the Welsh Hawks in 2018 and was part of the team of flies that helped us win the Airflo Anglian Water International at Rutland

Bibio Heather Fly
This is my number one top dropper dry fly for Llyn Brenig even if the heather fly has not yet been out this seems to have the ability to pull fish up. It works really well on any lakes that have terrestrials blown on. I have also done well with it when trout seem to be preoccupied with ants.

Big Brown Dry Fly
This is my favourite point dry fly when fishing the midland reservoirs, I have some great sport and results on Rutland and Draycote with this. The fly sits right in the surface film and the fish take this fly so confidently.
Green Butt Quill Shuttlecock
I was given this by Gazza Dixon a few years back and since then it has become my number one-point dry fly for Llyn Brenig and Llyn Clywedog. Even if the fish or not rising this fly works really well the green butt being a trigger point. But it really comes into its own when the fish are up and moving a great dry fly for covering risers.
Jungle Cock Black Straggle Red Holographic Cormorant (corm)
This fly was developed with my good friend Andy Everett when we both fished with the Soldier palmers. It’s a great top dropper fly and works really well when hung. The black straggle thorax seems to entice the trout in taking on the hang. It works well pulled or fished very slow and can be really good when the fish are hard on buzzers and its windy.
Change Hopper
This fly was designed by Andy Everett a long time back when we fishing an interservice competition on Rutland. It worked really well and helped the Army to 1st place. I have used it for a long time and on joining the Hawks found it to be one of there good patterns they had got from Change hence the name. Always amazing how flies circulate through the teams.

Black Skinny Jungle Cock Flashback Diawl Bach (DB)
This is a very skinny Black Diawl Bach that I was given again by Andy Everett. With the little flash back and JC checks it has it all. One of my go to nymphs on the cast. Best fished static on a floater or tip line the takes can be very hard.
