OES Clywedog League R5 Report by Russ Owen

OES Clywedog League R5

Having not been able to get out on the water since our Airflo Anglian qualifier a couple of weeks ago I was rather excited at the thought of 2 days on In form Clywedog with reports of big bags of fish being caught on dries over the last few weeks. Only for the weather to throw its usual spanner into the works a blustery wet weekend was forecast. Saturday I partnered up with fellow Flybox Welsh Hawks Gareth (Gus ) Jones it seemed that with the weather it was very much a pulling day I set up a Di 3 sweep with a 4 fly cast on the top dropper Candy booby with sunburst straggle throat in the next Russell’s green head cormorant on the next a Red head Jc cormorant and on the point a Black eyed pearl abortion sparkler.

In the morning we worked spots all around the top end of the Bigga arm Braich y ffedew Dead channel Carters and back down to Eblid we had around 22 fish including a couple of cracking browns that gave a superb account for themselves burrowing deep as opposed to the rainbows which scraped all over the surface.

After lunch we had to have a quick look around the bottom end of the lake this end of the lake always seems to hold more native browns than the top end maybe because it gets less angler pressure or it’s more suited! The wind and waves was considerably stronger this end and it certainly wasn’t pleasant we did manage to catch another 12 fish this end to the same pulling tactics and flies and yes we had about 6 native browns up to around a pound.

Match day Sunday

Always a great buzz around the place and anglers turn up earlier and earlier in eager anticipation and the banter is great after annual team photos it’s down to the jetty to get ready

I was drawn with with Lyn Evans of the “odds and sods” team we decided to give the cages a go for the first hour then take stock before deciding on what to do after with a bit more sunshine and a drop in temp due to strong Northwesterly wind I set up with a Di 5 sweep a great searching line on the gun I set the boat to drift a long drift right through the channel past the cages on towards A buoy

Fist cast I was in a great start ! by the the time we had drifted past the cage to A buoy I had 6 fish a better start than I’d expected on motoring back up I’d spoke to Gus who was also on 6 the area was on fire it was time to make the most of it before the pressure told the next drift I got another 4 and got broke of on a double up. Both boobies were working well but the corms were taking a few bonus fish as well around mid day things started to slow I was on 13. The wind was still gusting but in between gusts the odd fish was showing so on went the dries. As soon as the wind dropped and cloud came over fish would come blind and it was steady with about 4 chances a drift of which you might get a couple this is how things ran for the rest of the afternoon Team mate Gaz Dixon headed for the bottom end to try and pick his rate up a gamble worth taking as it turned out I picked away for a couple of hours and took my bag to 18 before heading to Eblid for the last 40min and back on the pullers and managed a couple more from the bay to finish on 20 and pleased with that after a grind of an afternoon. At the end we ran out comfortably and Gaz gamble for the bottom end paid off handsomely and he finished with a fantastic bag of 27 fish. As September moves on the Autumn buzzer will start so keep your eyes out for when the Clywedog “Jacuzzi “turns on.
