Russell Owen And Gazza Dixons First Day Of The Season On Llyn Clywedog
It’s always a good feeling for myself and Gaz to get out for the first time in Clywedog after all the preparations in getting the fishery up and running for the season. Pre season stock, boats back on the water, engines and bits and bobs around the fishery then straight into opening day.

Neither of us get much sleep the night before but it always comes round with the weather more often than not having it’s say on the day.
So the second day of the season is when we get out few less anglers about all the little glitches ironed out.
So this year we’ve had to cope with probably the wettest month ever in the build up the level of the lake going up and down like a yo-yo
and less than perfect water clarity due to so much rain.
The bank anglers out scored the boats by some margin opening day clearly evident that the fish were tight to the margins.
Today our set up was to use DI 5 lines 2 flies black and green tadpole on the point and a bright orange pulse blob on the dropper both very visible in the gloomy water.
We started our day drifting into carters bay were we both missed a fish on the hang in the first few casts but rusty me thinks lol.
Gaz took a couple of prime stockies as we drifted further into the bay before we headed for cwm coch the next bay along this is always a prime spot in the opening week and didn’t disappoint today we caught some crackers drifting along under the trees here and Gaz caught first double of the year !! (6lb watch for video )

We probably took another 10 fish as we drifted to the top of the bay it was evident the clarity improving as we went further in to the bay.
From here next stop was down to Eblid where the wind had been blowing in hard the previous day once again we caught fish right through the bay to the neck before lunch.
After lunch we headed down to the bay above the sailing club this area often fishes well in the week after opening we did have a few stockies here but we also had 3 stunning overwintered fish a wild brown and a decent perch before heading back up the lake to rainbow corner
We drifted right through the bay and back to the breakwater and picked up fish steady all through.
We had 28 fish to the boat few more Gaz end than mine probably better with the knobbler than me we didn’t change a fly or line all day but we did stay close to the shore where the fish are at the moment. Saw decent amount of buzzers hatching and I’m sure the month goes on and the clarity and temp improves the fish be up on the buzzer.
