Jim Crawford Picks His Top Ten Deadly Stillwater Trout Flies.

Black Nemesis

From the fly tying Stable of Ex national champion Jimmy McBride. A Fish catcher anywhere on your cast from a floater to a middle dropper on your fast sinkers.

Father Jack Buzzer

Very underrated style of flies. Awesome on any of the midlands reservoirs for me, possibly due to the hatching buzzers being bigger, various colours to match the hatch , give these ago you’ll be surprised.

Squintys Traffic Cormorant

Anybody who knows Andy Dunn will know he’s tighter than a dead heat!

One of Andy’s patterns I’ve found excellent on tip lines with a Booby or fab, great fly for residents and spooky fish, just enough flash but not overpowering.

Hawers Hot Spot Cruncher

Another for the midlands Reservoirs, cast it out and leave it once the stockies switch off. A favourite at Rutland for Manton and along the Bunds.

Cat Booby

Always going to be a white Cat Booby in my top 10. Brilliant on Menteith , Brenig , and all other lakes in the UK. From a Di5 sweep to a washing line with a floater or try it on the Bob position with crunchers behind it.

Olive Cruncher

My favourite pattern for the olives hatching on Menteith. Lift your rod tip up slightly to give you a cushion fishing this on the top dropper, you will get smashed with the ferocity of the takes.

Mckay Damsel

Great fly for winter trout fisheries or on the boat, Menteith has a huge number of damsels and when it’s wet is a very close copy, middle dropper on Brenig also works well and my number one Damsel for Loch Insch in Aberdeen prospecting around the edges when the weather heats up.

Redhead Henrik Cormorant

Only one word for this fly Eyebrook Reservoir Midge tip with three of these and a candy booby on the point , awesome fly for olives and then the damsels there are unbelievable.

Light Olive Owl Shuttlecock

Great for residents on Menteith Scale down to a 5# and single fly when the big guys come out to play. Try a drift from chicken leg bay to international bay fishing two of these across the middle of the lake, cast them out and keep in touch with them.

Menteith Candy Fab

One of the very first fabs tied for the Change fishing team.Derek Marklow came up with the original fabs that helped the change guys do a lot of damage in the comps on Lake of Mentieth. Personally, I like short lining them with a comp Di7 and sweeping them up to the hang, Try it.
