Russell Owen Picks His Top Ten Deadly Stillwater Trout Flies

Former World Champion Russell Owen and top Uk competition angler has picked his Top Ten Deadly Stillwater Trout Flies.

Black Quill shuttlecock

This has to be my number one dry fly plain and simple if the fish are up in the water feeding on emerging insects of even the odd terrestrial fish love the way this pattern presents itself half in half out. I caught over 40 fish in one comp on Clywedog on this pattern last season

Brown Hog daddy

A real fish finder this high Floating pattern will literally drag the fish up to take it even on the days when nothing is rising it’s a trout magnet. Tip give it a tiny bit of movement to attract the fish

Orange foam Daddy

Not your classic dry fly by any means but it sure gets the trout’s attention. I use this as a top dropper fly to bring the fish in. Tip try it on a tip or intermediate line.

Fiery brown bits

My number one middle dropper fly when fishing dry. I never gink this pattern infact I want it to sink just under the surface fish will just drive off with it always provides bonus fish for me

Red head JC Corm

Over the past couple of seasons this is one of the first patterns I reach for my middle dropper fly when fishing washing line it’s subtle but it’s bright head draws the fish in.

Russell Green head corm

Like it’s red head brother this pattern will draw the fish to your dropper also the tried and trusted black and green combination ideal for early season.

Hot head black DB

Once again, I’ve selected this hot head pattern for its ability to pull the fish in. Tip fish static on middle dropper on washing line for fish that have seen lots of attention

Brown Jc diawl Bach

This must be the best all round nymph it’s everything to all fish. If your fishing a water with decent amounts of food then look no further than this for your middle dropper

Candy booby with sunburst straggle throat

This pattern proved to be my number one booby last season fished on the point of a washing line set up when the fish were high in the water

Tip also try it top dropper on a di 3

Gold Arsed cat booby

One from our Celtic cousins north of the border came to prominence on Lake of Menteith but have used it extensively last season it’s equally effective on all the southern reservoirs

FNF fire prawn and sunburst fab

Although this is a very bright pattern it has an amazing ability to catch some older resident fish it accounted for a very good bag of fish for me at RUTLAND last season

Watermelon and biscuit fab

Now this pattern has been my go-to fab for the past few seasons fish washing line static equally at home on Clywedog or RUTLAND
