Arden Pollock Picks His Top Ten Deadly Stillwater Trout Flies

2 time brown bowl winner and top fly fishing competition angler Arden pollock Picks His Top Ten Deadly Stillwater Trout Flies

Glo Brite Yellow Diawl Bach (DB)

A great fly for the middle of the cast fished at all depths, but particularly good as part of a washing line set up on a midge tip either fished static or very slowly. This is one of the flies that helped clinch the brown bowl on Menteith.

ARDENS SUNBURST FAB

A successful pattern fished on the point as a washing line set up on a floater or tip line with diawl bachs and crunchers up the cast. This fab is a real attractor pattern that glows in low light conditions.

BISCUIT FAB

A successful pattern fished on the point as a washing line set up on a floater or tip line with diawl bachs and crunchers up the cast. This fab could be described as a little more subtle than others and always great for the more educated fish

PEARLY PETER

A nice mobile sedge pattern that has produced browns and rainbows across Ireland. Can be fished anywhere within a team of flies, though I prefer to fish it behind the bob with takes nearly always before bringing up to the dibble.

PINK EYED CLARET DABBLER

This pattern was created many years ago and provided success during a AW final on Rutland. This pattern fished either on the bob or point can be very good for the browns as well as the rainbows. Dabblers with this modern twist are becoming more popular for the brown trout in Ireland.

RED EYED UV CLARET DABBLER

A slight variation of the successful pink eyed claret dabbler with the addition of some UV bling.

YELLOW OWL

Where would I be without this pattern? This pattern has caught me countless trout across the country and is currently my top stillwater dry fly. A great all-rounder that will catch the most educated fish if presented correctly

GO FASTER UV CAT

This has become one of my most successful boobies in recent seasons. The pattern is a variation of a cut throat booby I saw several years ago on Brenig. A combination of the UV and micro twinkle in addition to the bright red hot spot really brings this fly alive when twiddled slowly as part of a washing line setup. This pattern proved it’s success when I caught 15 fish during the autumn international on the lake of Menteith and winning the brown bowl.

Olive cripple midge

I love this dry which can come in a variety of colours, but for me the olive is great colour all year round. This fly lays nice and low on the surface and can be irresistible to the trout when feeding on hatching adults.

Amber Flash Pulling Hopper

A must have fly on the cast when the trout are feeding on the olives, nymphs and adults. Pulled slow and steady on a slow intermediate line waiting for the lock up.
